Co-op society secy held in Assam for hoarding liquor

Silchar: Officials of the department of excise arrested the secretary of the Hailakandi district Handloom Weavers’ Cooperative Society on Friday for illegally hoarding huge quantity of foreign liquor.
A senior official said on the basis of inputs from locals, the officials of the excise department raided a godown at Aynakhal in Hailakandi district and seized 45 cartons of foreign liquor from there. Following an investigation, it was revealed that the liquors belong to nearby SN Wine Shop, owned by Dilip Bhowmik, who also happens to be the secretary of Hailakandi district Handloom Weavers’ Cooperative Society.
Excise officials after seizing the liquor brought them to the department’s office in Hailakandi. SN Wine Shop owner Dilip Bhowmik was also called to the office for questioning and was later arrested.
He was later produced before a Hailakandi court and the court sent the accused to judicial custody.
Sources said apart from one at Aynakhal, Bhowmik owns another wine shop in Hailakandi district. He is also an influential member of a political party. tnn
