ED gets proof of Ayan Sil's involvement in 6,000 hirings

Enforcement Directorate (ED) has found evidence confirming the involvement of arrested private real estate promoter Ayan Sil in the 6,000 recruitments made in municipalities and state-run schools of West Bengal. According to sources, a hard-disc seized from Sil's residence in a raid, contains names of the 6,000 individuals. Of them, around 5,000 were recruited in several municipalities, while the remaining were inducted as teaching and non-teaching staff in schools.

Car bursts into flames in Delhi, no one injured

Three men narrowly escaped a fire that broke out in their car in southwest Delhi's Vasant Kunj area, police said on Saturday. At around 11:30 pm on Friday, information was received about a fire in a car near Mohalla Clinic, Masudpur Dairy, a senior police officer said. Police reached the spot and found a Tata Nexon engulfed in flames. The three occupants of the car managed to get out in time, the officer said.

Odisha reports over 100 new COVID-19 cases after six months

Odisha reported over a hundred new COVID-19 after six months with 104 people testing positive for the virus, a health department official said. The cases were detected on Friday after 5,526 samples were tested, he said. The state had recorded 103 cases on October 12 last year. No fresh fatality has been recorded so far, and there are now 429 active cases in the state. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, 13,37,377 cases have been detected in the state. Of them, 9,205 people have died.

A total of 139 pediatric deaths from flu have been reported so far this season in the US, according to the latest data published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). North Korea on Saturday claimed it tested this week a second known type of nuclear-capable underwater attack drone designed to destroy naval vessels and ports, adding to a flurry of weapons demonstrations this year that have heightened tensions with rivals. The report of the four-day test came a day after the nuclear envoys of the United States, South Korea and Japan met in Seoul to discuss the growing North Korean nuclear threat and called for stronger international efforts to crack down on illicit North Korean activities funding its weapons program. The North's official Korean Central News Agency said the drone, named "Haeil-2" after a Korean word meaning tsunamis or tidal waves, travelled underwater for more than 71 hours before successfully detonating a mock warhead in waters near the eastern port city of Tanchon on Friday.

One District Reserve Guard (DRG) jawan got injured in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast planted by Naxals in the Bahker forest on Friday, police said. "The blast happened while defusing the IED planted by Naxalites to harm the security forces. China will hold three days of military exercises around Taiwan starting from Saturday, the People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theatre Command announced, the day after Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen returned from a trip to the United States. China will hold "combat readiness patrols" and exercises around in the Taiwan Strait and to the north, south and east of Taiwan "as planned", it added in a brief statement. Tsai met U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy while in Los Angeles in Wednesday, angering Beijing which views Taiwan as its own territory.

One tourist killed, five injured in Tel Aviv attack

An Italian tourist was killed and five other tourists were wounded in a Tel Aviv car ramming attack on Friday, Israeli and Italian officials said. An Israeli security source identified the assailant as an Israeli Arab from the town of Kafr Qassem. A police officer who was nearby arrived at the scene to find several people wounded and an overturned car near a popular Tel Aviv promenade. The officer "neutralized" the driver when he tried to pull a gun, police said.
