PUNE: The crime branch of the city police arrested a man and booked four others on the charge of accepting bets on the ongoing cricket matches of the Indian Premier League.
The Pune police crime branch said they have busted a betting racket. On Thursday, a police team were checking criminals on record, when senior inspector Srihari Bahirat of the crime branch received information that a 30-year-old man identified as Akash Goel from Lohegaon was accepting bets online on IPL match played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore matches near Gunjan talkies.
When contacted Bahirat said, "We conducted searches around the talkies and spotted Goel accepting bets on IPL matches near the Yerawada crematorium, following which, he was taken into custody and his mobile phone was seized."
He said, "An analysis of his phone revealed that Goel had downloaded an application to receive online bets ."
"During questioning, Goel said he and his four accomplices were accepting bets for IPL matches. We have transferred Goel's custody to Yerawada police," he added
A case under the
Maharashtra Gambling Act was lodged.
The match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore took place in Kolkata's Eden Gardens Stadium on Thursday.
