CHANDIGARH: The Consul General of India, Chicago, USA, has undertaken a preliminary enquiry (PE) into the auction of heritage items of the city in the country.
The consul general of Indian, Chicago in a communication to a Chandigarh-based member of the UT administration-constituted Heritage Item Protection Cell, has stated, "We have made a preliminary enquiry. It appears a private company might have auctioned those items on April 30." The communication stated, "In this context, before approaching the state authorities of Illinois, we need to ascertain the following whether under Indian law or the law applicable in India from which the auctioned items were originally sourced, are legally categorised as heritage item/item protected against purchase or auction under any existing regulation, whether these items were disposed of/sold by respective public office or they were taken away in a manner which under existing law would be considered illegal in India. Above two clarifications would immensely help us to intervene with appropriate authority in the state of Illinois."
