PATNA: An undertrial prisoner lodged in Gopalganj jail has been shifted to PMCH for treatment after he allegedly swallowed two vials of injection in a bid to end his life, jail and hospital officials said on Friday. His condition was stable.
Jail superintendent Satyendra Kumar said prisoner Deepak Chauhan was admitted to Sadar hospital on Thursday evening after he claimed he had swallowed two injection vials and complained of severe abdominal pain. "In the x-ray reports, we noticed two foreign bodies stuck in his abdomen and referred him to PMCH. We stopped giving solid food and are providing only fluid to avoid any complications. Right now, his condition is stable," Sadar hospital superintendent Dr Shashi Ranjan Prasad told TOI over phone on Friday.
Jail officials said Deepak, a resident of Piprahiya village under Barauli police station area, was arrested under the Arms Act in December last year. Reports said the prisoner was under severe mental stress after his arrest.
Earlier, in February this year, another prisoner lodged in the same jail had swallowed a mobile phone handset out of fear of getting caught during a surprise inspection conducted in the jail. The prisoner arrested for smuggling narcotic drugs was later admitted to IGIMS where the doctors successfully retrieved the mobile set from the stomach.
