AHMEDABAD: A team of the Ahmedabad Crime Branch, which got the custody of alleged conman Kiran Patel from Srinagar cops on Thursday, entered Gujarat on Friday night, said police sources. They are expected to reach Ahmedabad in the wee hours of Saturday.
"A team of the crime branch, which is bringing Kiran Patel to the city, crossed Gujarat border around 10pm on Friday," said a city police official, adding that Patel will be taken to the city crime branch office in connection with a fraud case filed by a BJP leader's brother.
A Srinagar court had handed over Patel's custody to a five-member team of the crime branch on Thursday.
Last month, J&K police registered an FIR against Patel at Nishat police station for criminal intention and indulging in activities within the jurisdiction of this police station and other parts of Kashmir by employing a high degree of forged means.
On March 22, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch registered a case against Kiran Patel and his wife under Sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 120-b (criminal conspiracy) and 170 (personating a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
According to a complaint filed with the city crime branch, Jagdish Chavda, 63, a Shilaj resident and brother of BJP leader Jawahar Chavda, said that Kiran and his wife Malini illegally occupied his bungalow worth Rs 15 crore. Kiran had promised Chavda that he would pay the money as he was supposed to get a big project from a leading corporate house, the complaint states.
