HYDERABAD: A man was booked for outraging the modesty of the bride in a drunken stupor during a pre-marriage event at a resort in Moinabad. The event was held in February first week.
The bride's family, who reside in Jubilee Hills lodged a complaint with the police against the groom and his family members, who are from Andhra Pradesh.
Jubilee Hills police said that sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons), 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 506 (criminal intimidation) and Dowry Prohibition Act sections were slapped against Vaishnav, his family members and friends.
The marriage has since been called off and the groom's family, which had promised to return the expenses and 3 crore dowry, went back to their native place, Chittoor. Police said despite several reminders by the bride's family, Vaishnav's family has not bothered to return the dowry money so far. Vexed with their delaying tacticts, the bride's family finally approached police.
The bride's family members are also natives of Chittoor but reside in Jubilee Hills in city.
"When the bride's family members objected to Vaishnav's behaviour at the pre-marriage ceremony, he and his friends allegedly assaulted them. Following this, the marriage was cancelled," Jubilee Hills inspector S Rajasekhar Reddy told TOI.
Prior to the event, Vaishnav's family allegedly demanded and took 3 crore towards dowry, a diamond ring and a watch worth 2 lakh. For organising the pre-marriage event and the marriage in Moinabad between February 7-10, the bride's family have spent 50 lakh.
Though his family had agreed to return the money, they have been dodging the matter, police said.
