KOLKATA: An app cab driver's timely alert to the police and the immediate response of cops prevented a 23-year-old engineer from jumping into the Hooghly from the Kolkata-bound flank of Vidyasagar Setu around 8am on Friday.
Cops said the youth, a resident of Sukhobrishti Housing Complex in New Town and employee of an IT major in Sector V, had suffered huge losses in the cryptocurrency market, so he wanted to end his life. "The youth told us that he had invested around Rs 30 lakh in the cryptocurrency market and lost the money. Besides using up loans and valuables, he had even invested his mother's pension. Of late, the youth had been allegedly receiving threat calls asking him to return the money. This led to the victim's suicide attempt. We have contacted his family and handed him over to his parents," said an officer.
This was the fourth instance this year that police have stopped suicide from Vidyasagar Setu. In two instances, they failed.
