Aussie Reece McLaren is desperately determined to score a win over Kairat Akhmetov.
The two top-five flyweight standouts will square off in a long-awaited rematch on May 5 when ONE Championship makes its highly anticipated U.S. debut at the 1stBank Center in Colorado. With both fighters riding the momentum of their respective win streaks, their ONE Fight Night 10 showdown could very well be a ONE world title eliminator.
But for Reece McLaren, it’s about more than getting a shot at ONE gold. It’s about avenging a loss he suffered at the hands of ‘The Kazakh’ more than four years ago. In an interview with the promotion, fellow Aussie John Way Parr shared some insight into his teammate's mindset going into the high-stakes flyweight clash.
“Reece wants it so badly,” Parr said. “He wants to put himself in that elimination spot because he could be fighting for the title next.”
‘Lightning’ has won four of his last five bouts, all coming by way of finish. His last appearance inside the Circle came at ONE 162 in October, scoring a second-round knockout against Brazilian Windson Ramos. His opponent, Kairat Akhmetov, will go into the contest on a five-fight win streak with those victories coming against notables including Danny Kingad, Tatsumitsu Wada, and Reece McLaren himself.
The man who has their hand raised will likely find themselves with a ONE world title opportunity. Against who remains to be seen as ONE flyweight world champion Demetrious Johnson will put his gold on the line in a trilogy bout with eight-time titleholder Adriano Moraes at ONE Fight Night 10.
