Rain at Mopa and Valpoi, max temp to be stable for 24 hours
Panaji: Brisk rainfall with some thunder was reported at Mopa and Valpoi while light showers fell at isolated places on Saturday evening, as overcast conditions persisted for the most part of the day.
India Meteorological Department (IMD), Panaji, had forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning at isolated places on Saturday.
No large change in maximum temperature is likely during the next 24 hours while the mercury may fall by one or two degrees subsequently.
Though it didn’t rain at any of the 13 centres in the past two days till Saturday morning, IMD officials said light rain may have occurred at a few isolated places.
“Light rain or thunderstorms are due to moisture incursion from lower levels and trough in easterlies,” Rajasree V P M, an IMD scientist said.
After the summer began on March 1, this is the second instance of light rain being recorded. January this year was the coldest in the past four years, and February was one of the hottest since 1969. March 2023 recorded maximum temperatures above 36 degrees celsius for much of the first fortnight but was normal in the second half.
The mercury rose significantly on Saturday, as IMD, Panaji, recorded maximum temperature of 36 degrees celsius — 2.7 degrees above normal — in the city on the weekend. After a long time, minimum temperature, which hovered around 21 degrees celsius for several days jumped to 25 degrees celsius, though within the normal range on Saturday.
While the weather is likely to be dry on Monday and Tuesday, IMD, Panaji, has forecast that light rain or thundershowers are very likely on Sunday and Wednesday.
