CHENNAI: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Chennai on March 8 and 9, Greater Chennai police have increased security and banned the flying of drones here.
Around 22,000 police personnel will be deployed for security during the visit. Similarly, the Tambaram commissioner has also banned the flying of drones and tightened security. Police will take over the security arrangements in the city from Friday evening.
Meanwhile, DGP C Sylendra Babu inspected Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MGR Central railway station ahead of Prime Minister's visit. He reviewed the five-tier security arrangements put in place.
As per the tentative programme schedule of Modi’s visit to the city, he will inaugurate the integrated terminal at Chennai airport and later inaugurate the Vande Bharat train at MGR Central railway station. He will also attend a festival at Vivekanandar Illam near Ice House and later inaugurate various schemes and programmes at the Alstom Cricket Ground in Pallavaram.
Ahead of Modi's visit, Chennai police have tightened the security at various places, including Chennai airport, Dr MGR Central railway station, Vivekanandar Illam, Raj Bhavan in Guindy, and INS Adyar near Napier Bridge and others en route from Chennai Airport to Raj Bhavan.
The cops have also conducted surprise checks at the lodges, mansions and hotels across the city. Chennai city police have also banned the flying of drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in the city and suburban limits on Saturday and Sunday.
Similarly, Tambaram Police Commissioner A Amalraj said over 4,000 police personnel will be deployed for security.
