Uttarakhand Police arrest cricket coach

Uttar Pradesh Police on Thursday night arrested a cricket coach in Dehradun for sexually harassing three cricketers, including a minor, being trained by him. He was detained by the police soon after being discharged from Rishikesh’s AIIMS Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for an alleged suicide attempt.

Narendra Shah, a suspended office bearer of the Cricket Association, used to run his own cricket training academy named Little Masters Cricket Club. Three cricketers who were training under him accused him of sexually harassing them. Following the allegation, he consumed poison in an attempt to commit suicide.

Circle Officer Pankaj Gairola said he was earlier admitted to Doon Hospital, however, was later referred to AIIMS-Rishikesh after he complained of abdomen pain after the suicide attempt. The police nabbed Shah on Thursday night after he was discharged from the emergency ward of the hospital.

As soon as his lewd conversations went viral on social media, the 53-year-old coach made an attempt at suicide and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The three girls who filed a complaint against Shah, accusing him of sexual harassment, have provided 164 statements to the police.

Meanwhile, Usha Negi, former chairperson of Uttarakhand State Commission For Protection of Child Rights urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BCCI President Roger Binny, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take strict action against Shah, who has also coached woman cricketer Sneh Rana.

Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga’s The Elephant Whisperers’ made India proud on an international platform by winning the 94th Academy Awards in March this year. The documentary bagged the Oscars for Best Documentary Short Short Film.

After meeting Monga and Gonsalves, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will now meet the documentary couple Bomman and Bellie during his visit to Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu on April 9.

Reports said PM Modi is scheduled to visit Theppakadu elephant camp in MTR and will also interact with Bomman and Bellie.

Security beefed up ahead of PM Modi’s visit to MTR

Heavy security has been deployed ahead of PM Modi’s visit to MTR and the authorities have directed all hotels, elephant safari, and tourist vehicles inside the area to shut down temporarily from April 7 to 9.

Reports said roads from MTR to Mysuru in Karnataka are also being renovated and a helipad is also being set up at Singara for PM Modi to land. Other areas like village pathways, electric poles in tribal areas, and swimming areas for elephants are being looked at.

The Elephant Whisperers’ Bomman and Bellie recently took the responsibility of an elephant calf, however, it couldn’t survive. Reports said the 4-month-old calf succumbed to complications as it could not digest lactogen and was stressed after separation from its herd.

The calf was found on March 9 inside a well at Dharmapuri. The forest officials along with Bomman tried to return the calf to its herd but it was a failure following which Bomman and Bellie took the responsibility for it.

Bomman and Bellie rose to prominence after The Elephant Whisperers’ was shot at the MTR and the Theppakadu elephant camp. The film was based on the caretaker couple who raised two abandoned baby elephants and formed a special bond with them.
