GURGAON: A Nigerian was arrested from New Delhi on Wednesday for allegedly creating fake profiles on social media and duping women. Cops said he was part of a gang that would befriend women online, pretend to be professionals from the US and UK and offer gifts before seeking 'Customs clearance fee'. Three other members of the gang were arrested on April 3 from Mandawali area of Delhi.
Police have recovered 25 mobile phones, 65 debit cards, 34 chequebooks and 12 passbooks from the accused, identified as Aman, Rahul, Santosh Kumar and Chibuke, the Nigerian national.
The arrest came after a woman filed a complaint on March 22 that the accused had befriended her on Instagram and introduced himself as a doctor from the UK. The fraudster took her address and promised to send gold and a gift worth 20,000 pounds. On January 30, she received a call from a woman who posed as a customs official, asking her to pay Rs 16 lakh to receive the gifts.
