ALWAR: A 40-year-old man and his three children were killed after a tractor-trolley laden with sand (bajri) hit an autorickshaw in the Kathumar area of Alwar district on Thursday.
The accident triggered a huge protest in the area as locals set the tractor on fire and pelted police vehicles with stones. The victims have been identified as Murai Rao, his daughter Krishna (14), and sons Nitesh (12) and Gaurav (11). Rao was driving the auto. His wife was also injured in the accident and is undergoing treatment.
The incident sparked protests and a police vehicle was vandalised. Protesters refused to let the cops take the bodies to the mortuary and demanded justice for the victims.
Till late night, senior police officers and district administration officials were trying to pacify the angry crowd. Locals alleged that tractors transporting illegally mined sand speed through roads, putting the lives of villagers in danger. Villagers are demanding strict action against mining operators.
They also alleged that the police and mining departments were turning a blind eye to the menace. "We have sent officials to speak to villagers because the road is still blocked. Additional forces have been deployed at the scene," an official said.
