46 dogs, 4 cats, 1 bird removed from Sanilac County home

The Sanilac County Sheriff Department and animal control removed 46 dogs, 4 cats and a bird from a home Tuesday after receiving complaints about the residence.
The search warrant at the home on Huron County Line Road in Greenleaf Township followed allegations of a person breeding and selling animals and animals living in deplorable conditions, according to the sheriff department.
"Deputies arrived on scene and found the home was in fact in deplorable condition. A strong odor of urine and feces could be smelled coming from the home while outside of the residence. Inside, where 46 dogs were located, the ammonia smell was overwhelming. Dogs were located throughout the home and in cages living in fecal matter and urine soaked flooring. Many of the dogs were covered in feces and were urine soaked," the sheriff department said in a statement.
All the dogs, plus four cats and a bird were removed by animal control. Animal Control is currently caring for all animals.
The animals are not available for adoption at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
The sheriff department said additional information will not be released at this time.
