California suspect takes two hostages, killing one, while fleeing police

A man fleeing police in Northern California took two hostages at a public park and killed one of them before eventually surrendering.

The identities of the two adults taken hostage have not yet been released. It was reported that both had been shot by the suspect.

The incident took place Thursday afternoon in the city of Roseville, just northeast of Sacramento, beginning when the California Highway Patrol attempted to serve the man a warrant.

He responded by firing at the officers first, wounding one, before fleeing to a nearby park where families and children were spending their day.

Around 12:30 p.m. local time, the Roseville Police Department received a call over their radios explaining that an officer had been shot, said Capt. Kelby Newton.

When they arrived at the park, they found the suspect running with a gun before he stopped and took two individuals hostage.

One parent, Victor Michael, was at the park for batting practice with his child when he heard what he thought were other kids playing paintball. Then he heard police tell people to get down before an onslaught of bullets filled the air. Michael said he heard about 20 to 30 bullets fired in total.

“I can’t tell you who shot first, I just know that I saw a suspect look back and the volley of fire just went off. It was crazy,” Michael said. “I just told my kid and everybody to get down.”

In the chaos that ensued, both hostages were shot by the suspect.

Newton said he didn’t know what prompted the warrant that led to the man fleeing in the first place.

The officer who was shot was reported to be in stable condition at the hospital.
