HYDERABAD: More than 13 years after he bludgeoned an engineering final year student to death in his Vanasthalipuram flat, her senior was sentenced to life term by a local court on Thursday.
After the trial, a local court in LB Nagar convicted engineering graduate A Shekar, awarded him life imprisonment and imposed 50,000 fine. On September 19, 2010, M Divya, 20, was killed by Shekar with a baseball bat which he had purchased earlier.
After committing the murder, Shekar fled from the flat and messaged Divya's friends. Based on his messages, friends visited his flat and found her body. Police were alerted on September 19 night and Shekar was arrested on September 24.
Shekhar was attracted to Divya and was upset that she was moving closely with a classmate. "His love was one-sided and he was an obsessive lover. He planned to murder Divya and, called her to his flat for a party on September 19, 2019. When she reached the flat, Shekar checked her cellphone and questioned her about messages from her friend. Shekar became aggressive and attacked her with a baseball bat, killing her on the spot," police said.
During the trial, police examined 40 witnesses, including Divya's friend, and the resident of an adjacent flat to whom Shekar had given the flat keys after the offence.
Police collected the purchase bills of the murder weapon (baseball bat). Also, chance prints collected from the baseball bat found at the crime scene matched with the fingerprints of the accused, prosecution said.
