Police in a fix over Sharukh Saifi's contradictory statements
A day after Sharukh Saifi, key suspect in train arson attack, was nabbed, SIT probing the case was baffled by the contradictory nature of his statements during preliminary probe. He was reluctant to reveal the motive behind the incident. During initial questioning by Maharashtra ATS, he claimed that he acted on someone's instructions, but he told the SIT that he alone carried out the attack.

Shahrukh Saifi (24), the suspect in Kozhikode train arson case who was nabbed from Ratnagiri in Maharashtra and brought to Kozhikode early on Thursday morning, was admitted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital after a blood test, conducted as part of medical examination, showed that he had a jaundice infection. Following this, he was admitted to the special police cell at the medical college for treatment.

Tamil Nadu reports 273 new Covid-19 cases in last 24 hours
Tamil Nadu reported 273 new cases of Covid-19 on Thursday, including 98 cases in Chennai, taking the active cases tally in the state to 1,366. Key epidemic indicators including test positivity rate and hospitalisation numbers have been increasing with the spike in new cases.Until Tuesday, less than 20 people were admitted to hospitals and none of them required oxygen or intensive care. On Wednesday, 69 Covid-19 patients were in hospitals including 19 requiring oxygen support and three in intensive care. On Thursday, the number of people admitted to hospitals rose to 76. The deaths reported in districts over the last two days were not added to the bulletin as they are being reviewed by the reconciliation committee, officials said.
