Mahwah woman accused of starting fire in her own condo
Authorities claim a 32-year-old Mahwah resident intentionally set fire to her bedroom Tuesday afternoon, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, which announced the woman's arrest the following day.
Amel Mersali allegedly lit the fire in her own bedroom, sending police and firefighters to the massive Tudor-style condominium complex where she lives on Hawthorne Lane, the prosecutor's office stated.
Crews worked through heavy smoke to subdue the blaze, which did not spread beyond the one room, said Liz Rebein, a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office.

Mersali faces charges of aggravated arson and risking widespread damage or injury, although Rebein confirmed the defendant was the only one harmed by the fire.
As of Wednesday, Mersali remained at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center, and will be scheduled to appear in court once she is discharged.
Mahwah police and fire officials did not respond to questions about the incident on Tuesday and prosecutors did not explain what evidence led them to suspect Mersali was criminally responsible.
