NEW DELHI: In a massive operation launched at the Arun Jaitley stadium, 25 people who were running a betting racket were arrested by police during the IPL game between Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans on Tuesday.
Police had received an input that the bookies would come to watch the match and many cops were deployed in plainclothes in the stadium. Cops said they would also investigate if the bookies had purchased the tickets on their own or someone had facilitated their entry.
Sanjay Sain, DCP (Central), said, "The online betting was being conducted through various sites and applications. During interrogation, it was revealed that these bookies cash in on the fraction delay in broadcast during over breaks to place the rates of bets. They keep themselves online constantly and keep revising rates on the IDs being used by them. On the basis of these rates, betters from all over the world play their betting game."

Cricket betting is illegal in India. On occasions, it has brought the game into disrepute in the country. But in past years, bookies have been active. Some were arrested too. The arrest of 25 shows that they continue to be active. Their large presence underscores the need for BCCI’s anti-corruption unit as well as police in other cities to be on their toes. Only smart vigilance and firm action can snuff out this practice.

Sain added that the betting was being carried out per ball and the bookies were constantly on calls to pass on the information. "25 mobile phones have been seized. It will take some time to unearth the entire chain, as it involves a lot of technical surveillance," the DCP added.
A case under sections of Delhi Public Gambling Act, IT act and 419 (whoever cheats by personation) has been registered.
Interrogation of the accused revealed there are multiple sites available that provide these IDs online. Few such sites are being operated from overseas. Several kingpins from all over India have been identified that are using their IDs of worth crores to manage these betting players and their agents. The arrested bookies are between the age group of 25-40 years. Mostly, they belong to upper middle-class families and are well-educated.
The accused were involved in such illegal practices for the last 5-10 years with the motive to earn soft money. Mostly, youngsters are engaged in betting since they are easy to lure, police said.
