THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A nine-year-old died after he accidentally swallowed a balloon while playing with it at Balaramapuram on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified by police as Adithyan, son of Sabitha, of Anzar Manzil at Thazhe Kanjiravilakam near Anthiyoor, Balaramapuram.
The police said the incident took place on Sunday morning while the boy was playing with balloons at his house. The mother, who sensed that the boy was struggling to breath, rushed him to NIMS Hospital, Aralumoodu.
During examination, doctors found that a piece of balloon was trapped inside the respiratory tract of the boy and they removed it soon. However, the boy’s condition did not improve and he was moved to a ventilator. He breathed his last on Wednesday noon.
“The exact cause of his death will be known only after the post mortem which will be held on Thursday. After inquest procedures, the body has been transferred to the Medical College Hospital and is being kept at the mortuary,” said the police.
The police have registered a case for unnatural death under section 174 of CrPC. The deceased Adithyan was a Class III student at the Government Upper Primary School, Puthichal.
