Stocks fell and bond yields trimmed their declines after jobless claims came in higher than economists expected, adding to a string of data this week showing signs of cooling in the labor market.
The number of jobless claims for the week ended April 1 came in at 228,000, down from an upwardly revised 246,000 the previous week. That was higher than the 200,000 that analysts expected, but still roughly in line with the 2019 prepandemic average of about 220,000.
