MUMBAI: Amid the water shortage complaints pouring in, the BMC has said that certain areas in the city could face a water cut above the 15% announced earlier, considering the geographical limitations - areas located at an elevation and at the fag end of its water distribution network - and the fact that water is being supplied through alternative channels to the Bhandup treatment plant.
The BMC has asked Mumbaikars to use water sparingly as repairs are being undertaken to the tunnel which carries water to the treatment plant at Bhandup complex.
The water tunnel was damaged during digging of a borewell at Thane. The BMC is estimated to spend Rs 13 crore for the repairs, which it said it would recover from the builder whose workers damaged the tunnel in Wagle Estate.
About 75% of water supplied to the Bhandup complex is through a 15km tunnel of 5,500mm diameter. The water tunnel was shut from March 31 for carrying out work to plug the leakage, and a water cut was announced across the city for 30 days, starting March 31.
