New Hanover court officials are making arraignment plans for a doctor charged in connection to allegations of sexually assaulting female patients.

According to a court calendar, cases for Michael Hasson, a Wilmington oral surgeon, are listed for Monday, April 10 in New Hanover Superior Court. However, Samantha Dooies, administrative assistant to District Attorney Ben David, said the prosecutor and defense attorney have not yet agreed on an arraignment date.

He is being charged with multiple charges of felony second-degree forcible sex, felony indecent liberties with a minor, felony statutory sex, and misdemeanor sexual battery.

More than 20 patients claim Hasson was allegedly sexually assaulting them while they were under sedation several years ago. The ages range from 12 to 69.

The North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners (NCSBDE) investigated billing trends of Hasson. Information showed that Hasson frequently charged Medicaid to keep patients sedated for long periods of time.

His license was also suspended by the NCSBDE.

The former operator of Wilmington Oral Surgery has been named in lawsuits resulting in millions for the accusers.

One of them was awarded a $4 million default judgment in 2019. The judgment gave $1 million in compensatory damages and $3 million in punitive damages, as well as interest on both.

The plaintiff, "Jane Doe," claims she went to the office to have her wisdom teeth removed, and before she was sedated, Hasson took her hand, and rubbed it against his groin area.

She also claims he was fondling her breasts after she briefly regained consciousness. Although Doe was aware of what was happening, she claims that she was too sedated to react.
