Eight-year-old girl crushed to death by dumper at Dahisar in Mumbai
MUMBAI: An eight-year-old girl was crushed to death by a dumper while she was walking home with her mother at Dahisar East on Thursday.
Dahisar police have arrested the driver of the dumper on charges of negligence under section 304 (A) of the IPC.
Vidya Bansode, the deceased, had accompanied her mother, Rekha, to drop her brother to school. The two were returning home on foot around 12.35 pm when the incident occurred at Rawalpada. The lack of pedestrian infrastructure forces people to walk on the carriageway.
The dumper came up from behind the mother-daughter duo. The driver could not control the vehicle and halt in time. The vehicle hit both Vidya and Rekha and halted. Witnesses started to yell at the driver who restarted the vehicle and moved a little ahead, crushing Vidya under the front wheel. Rekha, with the help of bystanders, extricated her daughter who had suffered serious injuries. She was rushed to a public hospital where doctors pronounced her dead.
Police took the dumper driver, Mukesh Dhale, into custody. Witnesses did not allow him to flee from the spot. "We have taken a blood sample from Dhale and sent it to the forensic lab to check for drinking,"said a senior police officer.
Local residents said the road is regularly accessed by school and college students. But they are forced to put their lives at risk due to hawkers and parked vehicles occupying the road.
Vidya was a school student and lived in Dahisar with her family.
