The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for Pune and its surrounding regions on account of possible thunder and lightning accompanied by strong winds. The warning was issued on Thursday evening and would continue over the next four days. Day time temperatures in many parts of the city and district continued to be high.
On Thursday, Shivajinagar reported a maximum temperature of 37.2 degree Celcius This was the highest recorded for this station this season. Other areas like Talegaon, Chinchwad, Shirur, etc saw the mercury hover near the 39-40 degree Celsius scale. This, IMD scientists said, was the normal summer temperature range to be expected in the summer season. Earlier in March, IMD had warned of heat waves which so far has not affected any part of the country.
However, IMD issued a yellow warning for Pune and its surrounding regions on account of possibility of thunder, lighting and strong winds. Some areas of Pune city as well as district are expected to receive light to moderate rains. These rains, it might be recalled, is due to incursion of moisture carrying winds from the Bay of Bengal due to a wind discontinuity. IMD has advised against the usage of mobile phones during lightning and thunder. Also people have been advised to stay inside and in clear open spaces during periods of high wind. The light rains and high temperatures are a welcome change for the city which has witnessed extremely hot February earlier this year
Light to medium rains with thunder and lighting is also expected in parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura; at many places over Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir; at a few places over Odisha, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh; at isolated places over West Bengal & Sikkim, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra & Kutch, Madhya Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka and Kerala & Mahe. Assam and some parts of Meghalaya might witness heavy rainfall.
The IMD has ruled out any heat waves to occur in the country for the next 5 days.
