
The anti narcotics cell of the Pune city police has arrested a man with possession of brown sugar worth Rs 40.44 lakhs.
Police have identified the accused as Shahid Akhtar Hussain Shaikh (49), resident of Inam Nagar in Kondhwa Budruk.
As per a press release issued today, acting on a tip-off to policeman Chetan Gaikwad, a team comprising inspector Sunil Thopte, assistant inspector Shubhangi Narke and others laid a trap and nabbed Shaikh on the road near his residence around 3 pm on Wednesday.
During searches, cops recovered 336.01 grams of brown sugar estimated at Rs 40.44 lakhs from his possession.
A first information report (FIR) was lodged against him at the Kondhwa police station under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Probe is on to know from where he procured the brown sugar. Police said the accused was earlier too arrested in a drug peddling case by the Mumbai police.
