Ludhiana: In yet another case of seizure of mobile phones from the Ludhiana central jail, the authorities caught hold of 10 mobile phones, 149 tobacco sachets and 10 bidi packets from the premises during a special checking drive. Importantly, the jail authorities had seized as many as 120 mobile phones, 60 tobacco sachets, 9g intoxicating powder and 1g opium from the prison in March.
Assistant jail superintendent Kashmir Lal said a surprise check was conducted in the jail on Monday during which the staffers found 10 mobile phones, 149 packs of tobacco, 10 packets of bidi and a mobile phone charger lying abandoned in the premises. A complaint was lodged with the police after which an FIR was registered against unidentified jail inmates under the Prisons Act.
Since March 1 till April 3, the Ludhiana police have lodged 25 FIRs related to recovery of mobile phones and other prohibited stuff in jail. During this period, jail authorities recovered a total 126 mobiles, 173 sachets of tobacco and 2,567 intoxicating pills, besides 9 g intoxicating powder and 1g opium. tnn
