PUNE: A cellphone was found on the premises of the Yerawada Central Prison on Saturday evening.
Yerawada police senior inspector Balkrushna Kadam told TOI: “The phone, which did not have a SIM card in it, was found hidden in the tin roof of barracks number one, circle one.”
He added, “It is not yet known how the cellphone got inside the prison. All inmates are checked thoroughly before they enter the central prison premises.”
Following a preliminary inquiry, Yerawada prison guard Sagar Bajirao Patil lodged a complaint with the Yerawada police on Monday stating that an unidentified person brought the cellphone inside the jail.
According to the FIR registered with the Yerawada police, the guards regularly check the prison premises for contraband, cellphones and other banned items.
On Saturday, a team of prison guards decided to scan the entire circle. During this exercise, the prison guards noticed that the tin sheet was bent in a suspicious manner. They took a closer look and found the cellphone in a cavity.
The FIR stated that the prison guards questioned the inmates, but all of them claimed ignorance.
The high-security central prison is spread over 500 acres and holds a few thousand inmates.
