GMDA: Work on at Chandu Budhera treatment plant to enhance supply to new sectors

GURGAON: GMDA has started work to augment the capacity of the Chandu Budhera water treatment plant (WTP) by 100 million litres a day (MLD), which will address the increasing demand of the growing population in new sectors, especially sectors 81 to 115. The first phase of the project is estimated to cost GMDA Rs 73 crore and is expected to be complete by June 2024.
According to GMDA officials, the contractor has started pre-construction work and the plant’s hydraulic design has been submitted to a consultant.
“Keeping in mind the future needs of the city and residents, augmentation of water supply is being done by GMDA. Work on the construction of a 100 MLD-capacity unit number 4 is under way at Chandu Budhera and the hydraulic design has been submitted by the contractor. Residents will benefit once the project is completed by 2024,” said Vikas Malik, GMDA executive engineer.
At present, GMDA is supplying 300 MLD water from Chandu Budhera and 270 MLD from the Basai plant. The metropolitan authority is planning to enhance the capacity of both WTPs by over 50% by 2024.
In the second phase, another 100 MLD unit (number 5) will be constructed at Chandu Budhera, for which a detailed project report is being prepared, GMDA officials said. Simultaneously, a 90 MLD WTP unit is being planned at the Basai WTP as well. With this, the total filtration capacity at the two plants will increase to 860 MLD in 2024 against the projected requirement of 809 MLD.
“With the addition of 200 MLD, it will increase the total water supply from Chandu Budhera WTP to 500 MLD by 2024, while a new unit of 90 MLD at Basai will further augment the water supply in the city,” the official added.
GMDA is augmenting the drinking water availability for residents keeping in mind the city’s rising population density, particularly in the new sectors along the Dwarka Expressway and Southern Peripheral Road (SPR),
Moreover, increased water supply would require augmentation of the city's sewer and drainage networks. To provide a robust sewer network in the city, the GMDA has already taken up the work of providing master sewer lines of various sizes in sectors 68-76 and work is scheduled to be completed by December 2023.
It also plans to provide a sewer network in sectors 77 to 80 and sectors 103 to 115. GMDA has also proposed the construction of a 100 MLD sewage treatment plant at Behrampur and another 40 MLD plant at Naurangpur.
