MUMBAI: A gang of four youths cornered a couple sitting in an isolated place in Nahur on Monday, forced the woman to leave the spot but thrashed the man before stripping his clothes, robbing him of Rs 5,200 cash and throwing him in a nullah.
Victim Deepak Shinde (25) managed to get out of the nullah and called the police control room after which he was admitted to Rajawadi hospital, where he recorded his statement. Based on his complaint, an FIR was registered with the Kanjurmarg police. The Kanjurmarg police have arrested four accused - Durvesh Keni (22), Pawan Baidar (20), Omkar Bingardive alias Tatla (24) and Hemant Vaiti (24) - all from Bhandup village.
Shinde told police that on March 3, he and his girlfriend whom he had befriended on Instagram met near Nahur railway station and decided to go to an isolated place for some privacy. Around 2 pm, when they were sitting under a tree, four youths suddenly appeared and asked the couple what they were doing there. After checking their identity and asking their names, they told the woman to leave but caught hold of Shinde and thrashed him. The accused had video recorded the entire incident.
Police said they later took out Rs 5,200 cash from his pocket but did not take his mobile phone. They also took his and his girlfriend's mobile number and threatened to make their video viral if they filed a police complaint.
"Shinde requested the accused to not throw him in a nullah as he didn't know how to swim, but they threw him in nonetheless. Shinde had noted down the motorcycle numbers of the accused based on which we traced them from Bhandup village," said an officer.
Police are now trying to find out if the accused have any criminal background or if they have similarly robbed any other couple in the past.
