The Association of British Insurers has confirmed Mervyn Skeet as director of general insurance policy having held the post on an interim basis since December 2022.

Skeet, pictured, joined ABI in November 2017 as assistant director, head of tax. He has covered his new post since the departure of James Dalton, who left to join the Motor Insurers’ Bureau as chief services officer.

Prior to joining the ABI, Skeet was managing director at XL Group and senior vice president at Chubb.

He worked in the insurance industry for more than 33 years and is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

Skeet said: “These are exceptional times for our industry as we tackle the impact of economic and geo-political challenges whilst looking ahead to the opportunities and future risks of tomorrow.

“I’m honoured to be an advocate for the general insurance industry and look forward to continuing to work closely with our members to make a difference on the issues that matter most.”

Rich pool of talent

ABI director general, Hannah Gurga, said: “I’m delighted that Mervyn has been appointed our director of general insurance policy. He brings significant experience to the role and has already made demonstrable progress on a number of priority areas in the first quarter of the year.

“We have a rich pool of talent here at the ABI and I’m especially pleased that an internal candidate was successful through a highly competitive recruitment process.”

Gurga joined the ABI last year as director general and succeeded Huw Evans, who stepped down from his role to join KPMG as a partner.
