The U.S. military said Tuesday that it launched a strike that killed a top Islamic State leader in Syria, while Damascus blamed Israel for a series of recent airstrikes that mark an escalation of a long-running Israeli bombing campaign targeting Iran and its allies.

U.S. Central Command, which oversees operations in the Middle East, said the “unilateral strike” on Monday killed Aydd al-Jabouri, an Islamic State leader involved in planning attacks in Europe.
