Sexual harassment case: Kalakshetra assistant professor Hari Padman arrested in Chennai

CHENNAI: The Adyar all-woman police in Chennai on Monday arrested assistant professor Hari Padman of Rukmani Devi College of Fine Arts in Kalakshetra Foundation on sexual harassment charges.
Padman and a group of Kalakshetra students went to Hyderabad on Friday to attend a Bharatanatyam arangetram there. The students returned to the college on Sunday morning. But Padman was missing.
The Hyderabad police confirmed that Hari Padman boarded the train to Chennai on Saturday evening with the students. Padman had kept his mobile phone on aeroplane mode during travel. He turned off the aeroplane mode at Madhavaram and called up a close family member to tell that he was safe. The phone call helped the cops trace him to his friend’s residence at Madhavaram.
A police team led by Adyar all-woman police inspector Vijayakumari arrested him on Monday morning.
The police registered a case against Hari Padman based on the complaint of a student hailing from Kerala. The police booked him under IPC sections 509 (whoever, intending to insult the modesty of any woman, utters any words, makes any sound or gesture, or exhibits any object) and 354(A) (physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures; or a demand or request for sexual favours; or making sexually coloured remarks, shall be guilty of the offence of sexual harassment) and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Women Harassment (Prevention) Act.
He would be produced before a magistrate court.
