Margao: With the task of bioremediation of legacy waste almost complete and the door-to-door collection of waste showing the desired results, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) hopes to keep its daily incoming waste landing at Sonsoddo for treatment to the minimum for better waste management.
Sources dealing with the affairs of waste management of the MMC said that of the 35 tonnes of wet waste landing at Sonsoddo every day, 90% arrives in segregated condition. Of this, 20 tonnes are transported to the Saligao waste management plant for treatment, while 5 tonnes are sent to the biomethanation plant at the SGPDA market, Margao. The remaining 10 tonnes per day (TPD) of waste gets deposited in the shed at Sonsoddo for treatment.
MMC sources said that as a significant portion of the wet waste comprises meat and fish, the MMC has proposed to dispose of such waste to parties which have already evinced interest in procuring it on a regular basis.
Besides, with the MMC proposing to make it incumbent on bulk waste generators to make arrangements to treat their waste on their own, the MMC hopes to reduce the quantum of waste landing at Sonsoddo for treatment to a significant extent.
The MMC has already identified 85 bulk waste generators, including hotels, hospitals and food processing plants, and is in the process of identifying more such units.
As regards dry waste, the disposal of 15 TPD is currently being done at Sonsoddo and at a shed at Nessai industrial estate. The MMC is currently engaged in upgrading its facility at Nessai, the launching of which will be held shortly, sources said.
The council will also soon float a tender for bioremediation of legacy waste lying inside the shed at Sonsoddo, a task estimated to cost Rs 2.04 crore. The volume of waste required to be bioremediated is estimated to be 10,000 metric tonnes.
Nevertheless, large quantities of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) still lie at Sonsoddo awaiting transportation to cement factories in Karnataka.
