The 2024 Mazda CX-90 makes a bold move upmarket with prices that don’t push too far into luxury territory.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Mazda CX-90? What does it compare to?
New for this year, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 is a three-row SUV that seats up to eight passengers with a premium finish. It compares to everything from Mazda’s own CX-9 to the Volvo XC90 and the Lincoln Aviator, as well as the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade.
Is the 2024 Mazda CX-90 a good SUV?
The Mazda CX-90 pushes into the premium segment with strong bones, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, and a spacious and luxurious cabin. It’s a fine choice for families who want more than basic transportation, and it earns a TCC Rating of 6.8 out of 10. That score can improve when crash-test ratings come in. What's new for the 2024 Mazda CX-90 ?
Longer and wider than the CX-9, the 2024 CX-90 is all new and ushers in the era of electrification for Mazda while borrowing from the BMW and Mercedes playbook.
The new platform is based on a rear-wheel drive layout and comes with standard all-wheel drive. It uses a double wishbone front suspension to go with a multi-link rear suspension. It provides controlled handling and a smooth ride that are both a step up from the mainstream three-row crossover norm.
The base and most powerful models get a new turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-6 aided by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The engine makes 280 hp in 3.3 Turbo models and 340 hp in 3.3 Turbo S models. It’s good for 25 mpg combined and it comes standard with all-wheel drive.
A third choice is a plug-in hybrid powertrain in PHEV models that teams a 189-hp 2.5-liter inline-4 with a 173-hp electric motor that’s powered by a 17.8-kwh lithium-ion battery pack. Total output is 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The battery provides 26 miles of electric range, and the PHEV is rated at 56 MPGe by the EPA.

Styling
The Mazda CX-90’s new layout lengthens the nose and sets back the cabin for a sporty look.
Is the Mazda CX-90 a good-looking car?
The CX-90 is an elegant choice among three-row SUVs, with an exceptional exterior design and an interior that looks appropriately upscale. We rate it an 8 out of 10.
The CX-90 has the athletic profile of the Lincoln Aviator, but with a rounded rear and integrated rear roof spoiler of German rivals. Compared to the front-drive-based CX-9, the cabin is pushed back, the nose is longer, the wheelbase is longer, and the front overhang is shorter.

Performance
A premium platform gives the CX-90 controlled moves that team with good power.
The CX-90 earns extra points for its strong powertrains and controlled driving dynamics to get a 7 out of 10 here.
Is the Mazda CX-90 4WD?
All-wheel drive comes standard. It can send 100% of the power to the rear and up to 50% to the front wheels. It works with either the turbo inline-6 or plug-in hybrid turbo-4.

Comfort & Quality
The CX-90 seats up to eight and has the interior materials to match its upscale intent.
With seating for up to eight, good cargo space, and high-quality interior materials, the CX-90 will serve a family well. While it’s not quite as roomy as some three-row SUVs, it still earns an 8 here.
CX-90 buyers can get seating for six, seven, or eight passengers. The second row is available with a three-row bench, a pair of captain’s chairs, or captain’s chairs with a center console. No matter the configuration, second-row occupants have good headroom and legroom, but they sit on seats with low-set, short seat bottoms that won’t provide good long-trip comfort. The rear center console is a boon to second-row storage, but it makes getting into the third row a little tougher.

How safe is the Mazda CX-90?
That’s to be determined, but it bodes well. Without crash-test results, we can’t give it a safety score, but the CX-90 comes standard with plenty of safety features and offers several more.
The standard features include automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alerts, active lane control, vehicle exit warnings, and adaptive cruise control that can restart from a stop.

Fuel Economy
Every CX-90 has some form of electrification, and the PHEV offers 26 miles of electric range.
Is the Mazda CX-90 good on gas?
It’s not bad for a large SUV thanks to electrification for all versions. The 3.3 Turbo models get an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 24 mpg city, 28 highway, 25 combined. That represents an improvement of 4 mpg city and 2 mpg combined over the smaller CX-9 and its 2.5 inline-4. It earns a 3 out of 10 here.
The 3.3 Turbo S falls only slightly to 23/28/25 mpg.
