Just 2 km from DM’s office in Noida, drain water overflows on to the roads
Residents say they are unable to step out of homes as water enters the ground floor
NOIDA: Sector 19 is one of the oldest sectors of Noida, situated a mere 2 km from the district magistrate’s camp office and 1 km from MP Mahesh Shar ma’s Kailash Hospital, both in neighbouring Sector 27.
Yet, residents complain they are living in a slum-like situation as a clogged drain has led to the overflow of sewer water on the road. “The sewer water enters the ground floor homes across A, B and C blocks of the sector, especially after showers. We have about 12,000 senior citizens in our sector and a good number of children. They are unable to step out and are most vulnerable to falling sick,” said RWA president Laxmi Narain.
The problem is aggravated as the water flow of this drain is restricted due to ongoing repair work of another part of the same drain in neighbouring Sector 27, which is expected to take about six to eight months to complete.
“The construction of drain number 2 in neighbouring Sector 27 has led to miserable conditions for residents of Sector 19 as the same drain, which crosses our sector, has been clogged and its makeshift cover has broken at many places, leading to an all-round foul smell,” said a resident. Residents maintain the impending monsoon may lead to a major health hazard as the foul smell and mosquito breeding are rampant in the sector.
While Noida Authority officials maintained that the cleaning of the drain will be undertaken on priority, staff maintained that “once the construction of the drain in Sector 27 is completed, it will resolve all the problems of Sector 19.” Apart from this, the vacant ground of the Sanjay Gandhi Vidyalaya in the sector has turned into a dumping ground and stray cattle keep roaming there. Officials assured action on the matter.
