Panaji: The transport department has granted administrative approval and expenditure sanction of Rs 65 lakh for the urgent repairs of the overhead shade structure at the Kadamba bus stand in Panaji. which is currently in a dilapidated condition.
“Due to the heat, passengers often stand under the shade of the several shops dotted along the terminus instead of their bus bay. This leads to crowding the pedestrian paths much to the annoyance of business owners and other commuters rushing to their platform,” said Effie Fernandes, a student.
Hopeful that the timely repairs will not only provide relief from the scorching sun but also from the rain showers anticipated in the pre-monsoon season, passengers insist that other repairs be taken up at the earliest.
“The Panaji bus terminus sees more footfalls than any other bus stand in Goa due to which breakages to the infrastructure are more frequent and repairs are required more often. Instead of waiting until parts of the terminus reach a dilapidated state, repairs should be taken up speedily at the slightest damage,” said commuter, Parul Gulati.
The Goa consumer action network (Goacan) had run a consistent campaign to get the overhead shades of the arrival bay be repaired following which the action was taken.
