Panaji: Work on an electronic and electrical e-waste management facility has begun in Pissurlem. Covering an area of 4,000sqm, the estimated cost of the project to be constructed under public-private partnership (PPP) mode is Rs 7 crore.
Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) managing director Levinson Martins said that the will complete in 12 months.
Goa generates around 500 tonnes of e-waste every day and presently, it has been disposed of outside the state. The corporation has appointed Goa-based M S Global as concessioner for the plant.
Martins said that during the last one year, the concessioner has started collecting and dismantling e-waste and transporting it outside the state.
He said in some cases, the concessioner pays to the customers for the e-waste like refrigerators and in some, people pay the company if they want to dispose of e-waste. “The tenure of the concessioner is for 15 years,” he said.
Speaking on the 100TPD (tonne per day) solid waste treatment plant at Cacora, Martins said that the plant is complete and file has been moved to the government to decide on its inauguration. The Goa State Pollution Control Board has granted its consent to operate the plant.
It has been set up on the site of an erstwhile waste dump and covers an area of approximately 81,000sqm. The legacy waste dump was removed using bioremediation to make way for the construction of the Rs 173 crore plant.
The state is also in the process of setting up a waste-to-energy plant at Verna at an estimated cost of Rs 500 crore and will generate 16MW electricity and 38MW heat while processing 250 TPD of waste. A total of 1,110 tonnes of waste has been collected and treated at this facility up to November 2022.
The state government has also decided to set up two 5TPD capacity bio-methanation plants at a total cost of over Rs 5.5 crore in Ponda and Valpoi. It will generate power from the waste generated in the jurisdictions of these civic bodies.
