Panaji: On an average at least one crime per day against women has been reported in Goa in the past seven years. Women and child development minister Vishwajit Rane said that 3,819 such cases have been reported in the state.
“The data has been collected by the woman and child development (WCD) department from one-stop centres in both the districts, women helpline, block development offices and the Goa State Commission for Women,” Rane said.
The WCD department has already taken steps to resolve the issues of crimes against women. All 12 BDOs have been designated as protection officers under Domestic Violence Act, 2005, to assist the aggrieved to file a complaint, to provide information on the rights, to make available a safe shelter home, if required and to get the aggrieved person medically examined, if she has sustained injuries, the minister said.
“The WCD department created 12 lady officers’ posts to assist and tackle the issues of women affected by violence, independently by relieving all BDOs of the duty. Appointments of these officers are under process,” Rane said.
“One-Stop Centres have been set up at the forensic department, GMC, Bambolim (from 2015) and Junta Quarters, Pajifond, Margao (from 2019), to provide medical, legal, psychological & counseling assistance under one roof. Universal Women Helpline -181 setup at GMC, Bambolim, from September 2018 to provide 24-hour emergency response to women affected by violence,” the minister said.
“Two vehicles were provided for instant rescue of women, if an aggrieved one sought assistance,” he said.
WCD department director Deepali Naik told TOI that the number of cases of crime against women have been compiled by the department since 2015.
Goa police recorded 282 cases of crimes against women in 2022, a small rise compared to 257 in the previous year.
