28-yr-old brain dead man’s gift of life
Rajkot: Five vital organs including heart, liver, both kidneys and the lungs of a 28-year-old brain dead man from Rajkot was donated on Saturday. This is the second incident in Rajkot when all the organs of a cadaver were harvested and successfully sent to the other hospitals across the country.
A green corridor was created for transporting the organs including heart and lung to be sent through chartered flight. According to the organ donation foundation, donor Naitik Jajal met with an accident while going out with his friends on Jamnagar Road on March 29. He had not worn a helmet and therefore received severe head injury during an accident. He was shifted to the civil hospital from where he was shifted to Gokul, a private hospital. However, doctors here declared him brain dead.
Members of organ donation foundation, Dr Divyesh Viroja, Dr Sankalp Vanjara, Dr Tejas Karamta convinced the family to donate the organs and with their approval started the harvesting procedures. “We started to harvest the organs at around 3pm and completed the entire process within three hours. The heart was sent to U N Mehta hospital in Ahmedabad, liver and both the kidneys to IKDRC, Ahmedabad. For the lungs, we did not get a recipient of this blood group in Gujarat and so sent it to M G Hospital, Chennai,” said Dr Viroja.
