BHUBANESWAR: Moderate
rain on Saturday flooded the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack leaving many low-lying areas waterlogged and leading to traffic congestion on busy roads.
The city recorded 44 mm rainfall by 5.30 pm, while Cuttack received over 38 mm rainfall in the same period.
People had to move their belongings to safety as water entered houses in several low-lying and slum areas. Waterlogging in front of ISKCON Temple disrupted traffic for hours. In Cuttack, a gallery in a college collapsed due to the rain.
Rain accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty surface wind also lashed several other places causing damage to houses or crops.
“I suffered huge loss due to the rain after growing vegetables in over two acres of land. I had taken a loan of Rs 30,000. Now I am thinking how will I return the loan,” said Arjun Martha, a farmer of Barang near here.
An official at the office of the special relief commissioner (SRC) said they will seek a detailed report from collectors on crop losses.
Daringibadi in Kandhamal district received the highest 67 mm rainfall, followed by Naraj in Cuttack with 65 mm. Besides, hailstorm was witnessed at Dhenkanal, Daringibadi and a few more places.
