KEONJHAR: A 60-year-man was killed by a tusker in Keonjhar district on Saturday while his wife and another person had a narrow escape. The incident took place near Daleibandha village under Ghatagaon forest range when the trio was returning from Manipur forest with their cattle to their village, Phuljhar. The man was identified as Bami Naik.
Sources said Bami and his wife, Suba Naik (55), and other woman Puka Naik (58) went to Manpur forest to bring back their cattle. They came face-to-face with the tusker that lifted Bami with its trunk and threw him. When the tusker tried to attack the two women, it got distracted by a stray dog and ran after it. The villagers first took Bami to Harichandanpur Community Health Centre and later to Keonjhar district headquarters hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Ghatagaon forest range officer Pravat Kuanr said, "There is an 11-member elephant herd moving in that area. This tusker might have come from Sadar range. We have already given Rs 40,000 to the wife of the deceased to perform his last rites. After inquiry, rest of the compensation as per the government norm will be paid".TNN
