Man charged with Austin's first murder of 2023

A 26-year-old man has been charged with the killing of a driver who crashed and died in January.

Demonte Harris, 26, was arrested Thursday by members of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and the U.S. Marshals Service. Harris is charged with first-degree felony murder.

A car crashed after 1 a.m. Jan. 5. in the 8600 block of North Lamar Boulevard. When officers responded, they found that the driver, Fritzgerald Bissereth, 20, had been shot. He died at the scene.

Bissereth had played striker on his junior varsity soccer team and was a popular student and friend, according to online reports and his obituary. Austin police said Bissereth's slaying was the first murder of 2023.

Austin ended 2022 with 71 homicides, a decline from the record 89 deaths logged in 2021. But last year's number of homicide cases is the second-highest total since the 1960s, when Austin police began to keep these records.
