Samsung SDI, the conglomerate’s battery-making division, is looking to take advantage of China’s rapidly evolving battery industry. To that end, the company has set up a new research and development center in Shanghai.

This isn’t the first outpost of its kind that Samsung SDI has set up outside of South Korea. It already operates overseas research and development centers in Germany and the United States. Samsung SDI is one of the largest manufacturers of batteries in South Korea. It also happens to be a major player in the global industry.

This is Samsung SDI’s third big R&D facility overseas

Samsung SDI opened its new research and development center in Shanghai this week. It caps off the company’s global network for R&D faciliites. Called the SDI Research & Development China, or SDIRC, the facility will collaborate with universities and research institutions in China to to secure localized technologies, collaborate with local talent, and analyze industry trends.

China has been investing heavily in the battery industry, particularly for producing new technologies for electric vehicle batteries. Major universities in China are also offering programs to train future battery professionals. A research lab will be dedicated at the SDIRC to develop and verify battery materials.

Samsung SDI’s global network of R&D faciliites will enable it to be more competitive as it can secure key frameworks for battery production, including but not limited to advanced manufacturing methods and facilities that are specific to China, Europe, and the United States.
