PRAYAGRAJ: A team of Prayagraj police on Friday reached Bareilly jail to bring ex-MLA Kahlid Azim alias Ashraf, brother of jailed mafioso-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad, to Naini jail in connection with lawyer Umesh Pal murder case.
Sources said police approached the authorities of Bareilly district jail with ‘relevant warrant’ and completed all formalities to bring back Ashraf who would be lodged at Naini jail.
The police are likely to seek custody remand of Ashraf in next the few days as Dhoomanganj police would be quizzing him regarding the killing of Umesh Pal, the prime witness in 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal, and two of his police gunners on February 24. On March 27, a team of Prayagraj police had brought Ashraf to Prayagraj from Bareilly in connection with a court verdict related to 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case.
While Atiq and two others were held guilty Ashraf and six others were acquitted by the court on March 28. The police had sent Ashraf back to Bareilly jail on the same day after the verdict. Ashraf has been lodged at Bareilly district jail since July 2020.
