Prayagraj: Three persons, including a biker, were killed when two trucks collided head on at Phaphamau bridge on Prayagraj-Lucknow highway early Friday, police said.
The impact of the collision was so powerful that one of the DCM mini truck fell off from the Phaphamau bridge into open land of Ganga river while the front portion of the second stone-laden truck was partially hung in air after jutting out of the railing of the bridge.
The accident disrupted traffic movement for several hours leading to massive snarls till late afternoon.
Sub-inspector posted at Phaphamau police station Virendra Singh told TOI: “The accident took place at around 5.30am when a stone-laden truck on its way to Phaphamau from Shivkuti collided head on with a DCM mini truck approaching the city in the middle of the Phaphamau bridge. The DCM fell off from the bridge leaving the driver and cleaner dead on the spot.”
Singf added that the biker was reportedly trapped in the collision of trucks and killed on the road.
Those dead were DCM truck driver Himanshu Sahu (23) and his brother (cleaner) Anshu Sahu (20), residents of Amba Nagrav (Lucknow) and a bike rider Bajrang Bahadur (48) of Pachdevra.
Upon being alerted, teams of Phaphamau, Shivkuti and traffic police rushed to the spot and sent the bodies for postmortem. Traffic police also pressed in four cranes to remove the hanging truck and the movement on the bridge was stopped for more than four hours. Police said the Prayagraj-Lucknow highway route was cleared at around 1.30pm but it witnessed massive traffic jams once it was opened for commuting. Long queues of vehicles were seen on both sides and cops managed to clear road jams by 4 pm.
