Vishwakarma is the second successive officiating DGP. According to officials in the home department, the new permanent DGP can be appointed only after approval by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). A list of DG-rank officers is yet to be sent to UPSC for approval by the state government. According to the home officials, names of the officers who have completed 30 years of service and have more than six months left for retirement are sent to UPSC. The list if sent will include DG (civil defence) Mukul Goel, DG (prisons) Anand Kumar, DG (CB-CID) Vijay Kumar, and DG Ashish Gupta who has been kept on waiting.
