‘Evelyn Hofer: Eyes on the City’ Review: Pursuing the Enduring Image

The underappreciated 20th-century photographer, whose meditative art evinces a temperament and technique distinct from many of her peers, is the focus of a show at Atlanta’s High Museum of Art.

When she learned I was going to see “Evelyn Hofer: Eyes on the City” at the High Museum of Art here, a friend emailed, “I love love love Hofer.” People who know photography and know Hofer tend to “love” her; it is an intention of this exhibition to give Hofer the recognition she deserves. Greg Harris and April Watson, the curators of photography at the High Museum and Kansas City, Mo.’s Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, respectively, have assembled more than 100 vintage prints from the holdings of their institutions and the artist’s estate, concentrating on the work she did between 1958 and 1967 for books on Florence, London, Spain, New York, Dublin, Washington and Paris. The show makes clear why Hofer was not a celebrity in her own time but should be one now.
