PATNA: Uterus removal by quacks in rural parts of Bihar is not new, putting a woman's life in danger. But what was shocking when a doctor cut a woman ureter while operating for hysterectomy.
Ureter is a tube through which urine passes from kidney to urinary bladder. It is positioned a little away from the cervix of uterus.
The incident occurred in a private nursing home under Bariyarpur OP in Sakra block of Muzaffarpur. Civil surgeon Dr Umesh Chandra Sharma said on Tuesday he had sought an explanation from the medical officer in-charge as well as block health manager of Sakra as to why no action had been taken against the accused doctor. "Though the exact date of operation is not known, but I got to know that the woman in her early 30s was operated upon in December and presently she was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Samastipur. I have asked the officials concerned to get the details of the incident and also explain as to why no action has been taken so far," said Dr Sharma. Sources said the victim is from Samastipur and had come to her sister's place for treatment. She got her uterus removed allegedly in Shridhhi Seva Sadan at Bahadurpur in Sakra block. She developed complications. People running this hospital are absconding and it has been locked after the incident came to light, sources said.
It is in the same Sakra block that a woman's kidneys were removed in an illegal hospital where she had gone for uterus removal in September last year. She is on dialysis for survival.
Patron of Patna Menopause Society, Dr Usha Didwania, said the removal of uterus at a young age for no reason leads to premature menopause and health issues. She admitted that gynaecologists in the state capital do get cases post uterus removal by quacks in which women come in bad shape. Talking particularly about the recent uterus removal in Muzaffarpur, in which the ureter was also cut, Dr Didwania said there can be anatomical abnormalities and injury in the ureter.
